History and Description:
No, the name does not have a swine derivation! Hogg’s Hollow was named after Scottish whiskey distiller and grist miller Joseph Hogg who settled there in 1824. His sons subdivided the land into 141 lots in 1856 and gave the development its current name. Back then it was considered prime swampland and remained pretty well undeveloped until much later. A tributary of the Don River runs right through the area, presenting waterfronts to several prime lots. Most of the current houses here were constructed between the 1920’s and the 1960’s.
Lifestyle:
Hills, valleys, bridges, winding roads, homes perched above, other homes sprawling below with lush reverse ravines. Still and quiet. Strong community cohesion. Community fairs, outdoor ice rink, walking paths, children’s playground. As enchanting a Toronto neighbourhood as you will find. Expensive. Go for a stroll, a bike ride or drive back through there and see if you can spot one of the original log houses.
Hogg’s Hollow is a very peaceful part of the city and a real jewel well worth the visit.
The Jolly Miller tavern at 3885 Yonge Street, which dates from 1857, is a historic neighbourhood landmark that currently houses a restaurant. Loblaws’ flagship grocery store is just down the road. Continuing south, there are many other shops, restaurants, banks, children’s stores and the like. The subway made its way to York Mills in the early 1970’s, making downtown’s hustle and bustle all very accessible.
